#2 Attractions in Barcelona

Enjoy art and nature at Park Güell, an oasis of color and design in the city.

Park Güell Places

One of the most magnificent and luxurious parks on our planet, which can even compete with the great imperial gardens of the Middle Kingdom, is located in Barcelona. The whole park is the outcome of Gaudi’s naturalistic vision, but there are some places that should be at your bucket wish list.

Turó de les tres creus

El turó de les Tres Creus is the Spanish name for Hill of the Three Crosses. Via a path, you reach an elevation that gives you a very nice view of the city. There are also 3 crosses that represent the agony of Christ. Gaudi intended to build a chapel on the hill. However, these building plans never went ahead.

Park Güell Lizard

At the entrance of the park, lizards decorated with broken china and glass are going to welcome you. Gaudí was convinced that in nature everything should be naturally bright, and not monochromatic. The beautiful unimaginable lizard is now declared one of the unique attractions of Barcelona.
Austria Gardens of Park Guell Barcelona

Park Güell garden

The Austria Gardens, the most recent addition to Park Güell’s history, stand in dramatic contrast to the rest of the park due to their foreign vegetation, which makes the sun-drenched palms and northern conifers look decidedly non-tropical.

Park Güell bench

Behind the roof of Sala Hipostila is a wide and airy terrace, fenced with wavy benches. The benches were preened with colorful ceramic tiles, which dried quickly after a downpour. Amazingly, this curvy bench is predicted to be the longest bench in the world. On this bench which was also designed by Josep M. Jujol, visitors can sit back while enjoying the spectacular view of the expanse of the city of Barcelona.

Park Güell mosaic

Around the Greek square, you will find a large bank. This appears to be a sea snake and is covered in mosaic. Across the excavated part, a wall with decorations reminiscent of palm trees has been placed. This place still offers a fantastic view of both the sea and the city itself.

Casa Larrard Park Guell

When Eusebi Guell created the area as a posh housing estate with Gaudi as the architect, the mansion was already there. After renovations were completed in 1907, Count Guell moved into Park Guell.

In Park Guell, only the white chalet perched above the hill and the show house that Gaudi moved into in 1906 were constructed. Today, it houses the Gaudi Museum.

The architecture of Park Güell

The Park Güell cathedral is the pinnacle of the “naturalistic” style that made this internationally renowned architect Antoni Gaudi famous. It is without a doubt one of the things tourists to Catalonia must do. Business tycoon Eusebi Güell of Catalonia hired Gaudi to build Park Güell. In 1984, UNESCO designated this park, which symbolizes Catalan modernism, as a World Heritage Site.

The architecture of the site’s structures, pathways, and other components reflects the evolution of Gaud’s ideas. As a result, certain architectural features mimic those found in flora and fauna. In a manner, the shapes are “baroque” since they deviate from the rational geometry frequently observed in contemporary cities.

According to certain experts, Park Güell has some mystical components. Some claim that the imagery decorations in the park also refer to Freemasonry in addition to the usual symbols of Catalonia and Catholicism. Additionally, it is believed that the ancient, mythological temple of Apollo at Delphi served as inspiration for the park’s architecture. This blend of modern architecture and mysticism leaves a lasting effect, especially around dusk.

The architects of Park Güell

Eusebi Guell commissioned Antoni Gaudi, for the creation of the extraordinarily colorful city park of Barcelona. Gaudi in turn called his fellow architects who not only assisted him in the designing of Park Guell but also put their efforts into the creation of beautiful urbanization.

  • Antoni Gaudí: Antoni Gaudi, a well-known Catalan architect who is considered an expert in Catalan modernism, is beyond any introduction. Gaudi was fond of nature and its objects. In all his works he puts nature at its utmost priority. Park Guell is the reflection of one of his wild imaginations. Other remarkable works of Gaudi include Casa Mila, House of Vicens, Guell Palace, and Sagrada Familia.

  • Joan Rubió: Joan Rubio, a Spanish architect assisted Antoni Gaudi in his most famous projects Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. He was one of the synthesiser of Gaudi’s architectural ideas. He was also elected as the councilor member of Barcelona city. His most important contributions are in the buildings Casa Macari Golferichs, the House Roviralta – El Frare Blanc, and the Escola Industrial

  • Josep Maria Jujol: Josep Maria Jujol, a sculptor, painter, furniture designer, and above all an architect is the one who collaborated with Antoni Gaudi on most of his projects, namely Casa Mila and Park Guell. Together they designed unimaginable yet highly attractive pieces of nature. One of the most famous works of Jujol is his undulating bench with the trencadis technique in Park Guell.

  • Francesc Berenguer: Francesc Berenguer, formerly known as the “right man” of Gaudi, was a Spanish modernista architect. He was a good friend and assistant to Gaudi. He never received his diploma but has amazed people with his amazing work. He designed a house, Casa Museu Gaudí, in Park Guell in which Gaudi lived and now it serves as a museum displaying Gaudi’s furniture and drawings.
